Review

In the summer of 2020, among a world consumed by pandemic, the world of cinema also witnessed an unusual phenomenon- Neftlix’s latest movie “The Last Days of American Crime”. This action-thriller is adapted from a comic book authored by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini. It was premiered on June 5th and starred Edgar Ramirez, Anna Brewster, Michael Pitt and Sharlto Copley. The film was directed by Oliver Megaton, who is primarily known for his work in the Transporter franchise.

The plot revolves around an interesting premise- In a dystopian America where crime rates have skyrocketed due to governmental corruption, a team of criminals aims to execute one last heist to get out of the country before an experimental signal debilitates any criminal impulses. The concept of a heist film with sci-fi elements is intriguing in itself.

When it comes to casting, all four lead stars were impressive with their respective performances. Ramirez had some emotionally charged scenes as Graham Bricke- the mastermind behind the final heist. Meanwhile, Sharlto Copley played Kevin Cash with his trademark eccentricity that made for an entertaining character.

However, some viewers point out that the characters are undeveloped and mostly one-dimensional which could be construed as a downside for such a lengthy movie (2 hours 28 minutes). But it does not entirely detract from the excitement factor that makes “The Last Days Of American Crime” worth watching.

The cinematography of this movie deserves mention since it was executed beautifully. For instance, when the viewer gets transported into gritty industrial spaces or metropolitan backdrops- they can almost feel their skin crawl along with the characters.

However, many critics did have issues with aspects like plot development and directorial decisions in terms of pacing. Detroit News’ Adam Graham criticized Oliver Megaton’s directing style; saying “Megaton has no sense of pacing or suspense, and the story stumbles around like it’s looking for something to do before settling in on its heist finale”.

Despite mixed reviews critically, the film has found an audience that loves it. Controversy aside, everyone can agree that this movie is a colorful and gritty sensory experience with plenty of thrills. It’s not perfect- but it is an enjoyable spectacle that provides a much-needed escape in a world full of uncertainty.

Overall, “The Last Days Of American Crime” is not groundbreaking or thought-provoking; but it does provide an entertaining and visually striking ride. The slick presentation and attention to detail put into the cinematography are worthy of applause. Certainly, those who enjoy more graphic crime thrillers will find this movie appealing. As for others- this might be worth watching just to appreciate how far technology has come in terms of creating action-packed movies with fantastic production value.
