Night School: A Comedic Look at the Power of Perseverance and Friendship
There are few things in this world more unpredictable than success. Sometimes it comes to us when we least expect it, and sometimes it eludes us even when we’ve done everything right. This is one of the many themes explored in the film Night School, a comedy that tells the story of a group of adults who enroll in night classes to earn their GEDs.
The film stars Kevin Hart as Teddy, a high-school dropout who has spent his adult life working odd jobs and trying to impress his girlfriend Lisa (Megalyn Echikunwoke). When he accidentally blows up the store where he works, he finds himself in need of a new career. His best friend Marvin (Ben Schwartz) suggests that he go back to school, but Teddy is skeptical – after all, how hard could it be to get a GED?
As it turns out, quite hard indeed. When Teddy enrolls in night classes at his local community college, he finds himself surrounded by a colorful cast of characters who are just as lost and hopeless as he is. There’s Mackenzie (Anne Winters), a teenage mom who’s struggling to keep her head above water; Luis (Al Madrigal), an immigrant who’s terrified of speaking English; Jaylen (Romany Malco), an ex-con with anger-management issues; Mila (Tiffany Haddish), the no-nonsense teacher who’s determined to help them all succeed.
From start to finish, Night School is a hilarious romp through the trials and tribulations of adult education. But beneath the surface humor lies a deeper message about perseverance and friendship – two qualities that can make all the difference when life gets tough.
One of the standout performances in Night School comes from Tiffany Haddish, whose portrayal of Mila is both tough-as-nails and surprisingly vulnerable. Haddish, who rose to fame in 2017’s Girls Trip, is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought-after comedians, and it’s easy to see why. Her comedic timing is impeccable, and she has a natural charisma that makes her a joy to watch on screen.
But it’s not just the actors who make Night School a success – the film also boasts some impressive technical achievements. The cinematography by Greg Gardiner creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while editor David Rennie keeps the pace brisk and engaging. And then there are the sound effects, which add an extra layer of humor to some of the film’s more absurd scenes (such as when Teddy crashes his car into a lake).
Of course, no film is without its flaws, and Night School is no exception. Some critics have argued that the plot is predictable and formulaic, while others have criticized the film for relying too heavily on slapstick humor. But for those who are willing to look past these minor issues, Night School offers a fun and inspiring look at what can be accomplished when we refuse to give up on ourselves and those around us.
As Malcolm Gladwell writes in his book Outliers, “Success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances.” In the case of Night School, those circumstances include hard work, perseverance, and the support of family and friends. Whether you’re struggling with your own education or simply looking for some light-hearted entertainment, this film offers something for everyone. So grab your popcorn and get ready to laugh – you won’t be disappointed.
