Review
Burke and Hare, a black comedy based on real-life events that occurred in the early 19th century, is an absolute masterpiece. The film is directed by John Landis, who has previously directed iconic films such as The Blues Brothers and An American Werewolf in London.
The story follows two struggling merchants, William Burke (Simon Pegg) and William Hare (Andy Serkis), who resort to selling the dead bodies of their victims to an anatomist for research. In a time where dissection was considered to be taboo and illegal, the duo saw this as an opportunity to make some quick money.
From the very first scene, Burke and Hare are shown as struggling, desperate men who have no qualms about committing heinous crimes for personal gain. Simon Pegg beautifully portrays Burke’s desperation and willingness to do whatever it takes to survive. Andy Serkis’s portrayal of Hare is equally impressive; he perfectly captures the character’s slyness and ability to manipulate others for his own benefit.
The supporting cast is filled with talented actors such as Tom Wilkinson, Tim Curry, and Isla Fisher, all of whom add their unique touch to the film. Tom Wilkinson’s performance as Dr. Knox is particularly noteworthy; he brings a certain gravitas to the role that makes him stand out from the rest of the cast.
The film’s plot is well-constructed and engaging throughout. It manages to balance humor and horror effectively which keeps audiences engaged from start to finish. Throughout its runtime, Burke & Hare is an absolute delight – a twisted yet entertaining story that never loses its pacing or grip on its audience.
One of the interesting facts about this movie is that it was inspired by true events. In 1827 Edinburgh, Scotland there did exist two men named William Burke and William Hare who are believed to have killed at least sixteen people for medical purposes. While many of their actions remain a mystery, Burke and Hare’s case became infamous and still fascinates people around the world.
The film’s score is equally exciting. Composed by Iain Softley, it perfectly captures the mood of each scene, whether it is a light-hearted moment or a gruesome murder. It’s safe to say that the music is an essential component of Burke & Hare’s success.
The film was shot entirely in Edinburgh, Scotland – which gives the film an authentic historic vibe. The production team did an exceptional job recreating the atmosphere of 19th-century Scotland through their use of locations, costumes, and props.
Overall, Burke & Hare is an underappreciated gem that deserves more attention than it has received. The movie contains excellent cinematography accompanied by witty dialogue that makes its characters – especially Burke and Hare- extremely memorable. Even after watching it multiple times, the film doesn’t lose its charm.
As with most films, there are criticisms to be found in Burke & Hare as well. Some may argue that certain scenes lack depth or further exploration, while others may find fault with specific character arcs. Still, these minor flaws do little to detract from the overall quality of the movie.
In terms of accolades, it’s surprising to note that the film didn’t receive many award nominations despite its excellent performances and direction. Regardless of this oversight by award committees Burke & Hare remains a critical favorite among audiences who appreciate dark comedies.
All in all, Burke & Hare stands out as one of John Landis’ finest works as a director. It manages to blend genres effortlessly and tells a captivating story that will keep you on your toes till its very end. So if you’re looking for something unique and entertaining to watch – look no further than this thrilling black comedy masterpiece!
