Review
If you’re looking for a mind-bending sci-fi film that explores the intricacies of time travel and the human condition, look no further than “Needle in a Timestack.” Directed by John Ridley and based on a short story by Robert Silverberg, this movie takes viewers on a wild ride through multiple realities and alternate timelines.
The storyline begins with a married couple, Nick and Janine (played by Leslie Odom Jr. and Cynthia Erivo), who are deeply in love but experiencing some challenges in their relationship. Nick is struggling to write his next novel while Janine is focused on her career as an architect. However, everything changes when they discover that time itself is unraveling around them.
As Nick attempts to find a solution to the temporal disruption, he discovers that there are other versions of himself in alternate timelines. In one reality, he’s become wildly successful as a writer but at the cost of his marriage to Janine. In another, he’s still with Janine but loses her to an illness. In yet another timeline, they never meet at all.
The plot thickens when Nick encounters a mysterious man named Mac (Orlando Bloom) who claims to have knowledge of how to fix the timeline. Along with Janine and Mac, Nick embarks on a dangerous journey through time to set things right before it’s too late.
One of the standout aspects of “Needle in a Timestack” is its stellar cast. Leslie Odom Jr., known for his role in “Hamilton,” brings depth and nuance to his portrayal of Nick. Cynthia Erivo shines as well as Janine, portraying both vulnerability and strength as she navigates the twists and turns of time travel.
Orlando Bloom delivers an impressive performance as Mac, injecting just enough mystery into his character to keep viewers guessing about what his true intentions are.
Perhaps most impressive, however, are the visual effects used in this film. The cinematography and special effects work together seamlessly to create a dizzying array of timelines and alternate realities. One standout scene involves Nick witnessing multiple versions of himself arguing in a bar – a feat that required meticulous planning and execution from the filmmakers.
While “Needle in a Timestack” hasn’t received as much mainstream attention as other sci-fi films, it’s garnered critical acclaim for its originality and thought-provoking themes. The film premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews, with critics praising its ambition and emotional resonance.
As John Ridley explains, “it’s not just about time travel or alternate timelines, it’s about the choices we make in life and how they shape our futures.” By exploring these themes through the lens of science fiction, “Needle in a Timestack” offers up an innovative and engaging take on the genre.
Overall, “Needle in a Timestack” is an impressive achievement that will leave audiences pondering the nature of time and their own choices long after the credits roll. So if you’re looking for a movie that offers up something truly different from the typical Hollywood fare, give this one a try – you won’t be disappointed.
