Review
It is with great pleasure that I bring to you, dear readers, a review of the latest cinematographic production of “Cymbeline”. The movie is the adaptation of one of William Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays and it has been brought to life by the skilled hands of Michael Almereyda.
Now, I must confess that when I first heard about this film, I felt a slight pang of trepidation. After all, Shakespeare’s work is a tough nut to crack, especially for those who do not have an intimate understanding of his language, poetry and wit.
However, rest assured that this production does its best to make you feel right at home in the story. Ethan Hawke’s take on Posthumus Leonatus is engaging and heartfelt, and Penn Badgley’s turn as Cloten provides a decent amount of comedy relief.
The plot revolves around Posthumus’ love for Imogen (played by Dakota Johnson), who happens to be Cymbeline’s daughter. Cymbeline (played by Ed Harris) himself is a kingly figure whose power is being challenged by Roman forces. Naturally, there are more twists and turns in the plot than there are pages in this article.
One standout aspect of the film is its ability to draw you in with its stunning cinematography. The streets of New York City are used to great effect as stand-ins for ancient Rome and Britain, and the location choices add an air of authenticity to what could have easily been yet another stage-play adaptation.
As someone who has rarely been moved by Shakespearean productions (I am more partial to Buster Keaton comedies), I found myself completely invested in “Cymbeline”, despite its occasionally convoluted storyline. The ending itself was particularly satisfying – no spoilers here!
Of course, as with any production involving Shakespeare’s work, some criticism may be levied at the dialogue itself. Some purists may argue that certain lines or phrases were cut out or changed, but I found the changes to be more of a boon than a curse – after all, the original dialogue was meant to be spoken on stage in Shakespeare’s time.
Finally, it would not be a proper review if I did not mention the film’s score. The musical accompaniment by David Ludwig shines through in many scenes and adds an extra layer of atmosphere that elevates the drama to even greater heights.
In conclusion, “Cymbeline” is not perfect but it is a unique and engaging take on one of Shakespeare’s less well-known plays. Its cast, combined with its stunning location choices and excellent score make it well worth the price of admission. Plus, where else can you see Ed Harris dressed up as an ancient king?
