Review
In a world where evil is rampant, Dushman is a movie that offers a glimpse into the dark side of humanity. The film, which was released in 1998, tells the story of two sisters, Sonia and Naina, who are brutally raped and left for dead. Sonia dies, but Naina survives and sets out on a mission of vengeance against her perpetrators.
The plot is an introspective exploration of the themes of justice, revenge and redemption. The story unfolds in non-linear fashion which makes it even more interesting. It takes us on a journey through the past and present lives of the characters.
The movie stars Kajol as Naina Sehgal, Ashutosh Rana as Gokul Pandit, and Jas Arora as Inspector Suraj Singh Rathod. Each cast member perfectly embodies their respective role; especially Kajol who gives one of her best performances.
The acting is top-notch – every character makes an impact in their own way. In particular, Ashutosh Rana’s portrayal of Gokul Pandit is chillingly believable. He manages to convey so much menace with just his eyes.
The score is hauntingly beautiful – it adds an extra layer of intensity to each scene. The cinematography is masterful – each shot feels like a work of art.
Directed by Tanuja Chandra, Dushman tackles some hard-hitting themes with grace and nuance. The film was ahead of its time – it dealt with rape culture before it became part of mainstream discourse.
Dushman went on to become a huge commercial success upon its release; perhaps because it struck a chord with audiences across India. It raises questions about how we deal with trauma – do we let it consume us or do we channel our pain into something productive?
Some critics have criticized the film for its depiction of violence against women; however, I believe that Dushman handles the subject matter sensitively without glorifying violence.
Despite its heavy subject matter, the movie is not without moments of levity. The conversations between Naina and her supportive boyfriend seem to provide a necessary respite from the otherwise grim proceedings.
The film’s climax is a satisfying conclusion to Naina’s arc. It is heart-wrenching and cathartic all at once. The final scene, in which Naina delivers an emotional speech to Pandit, is one of the most memorable in Bollywood history.
One of the film’s most famous quotes comes from Pandit himself: “Jo woh kehna chahta hai, woh kalma padh kar bata denge.” (What he wants to say, I’ll make him recite by heart tomorrow.)
Overall, Dushman is a well-crafted movie that deserves its place in Indian cinema history. It showcases some exceptional performances, well-scripted dialogue, and some truly memorable scenes. Even more than two decades after its release it remains an important cultural artifact that speaks to the human condition.
