Review
In the outskirts of London, there is a place where the intricate web of city life interlaces with the harsh reality of poverty and social inequality. It is in this setting that the story of “Breaking and Entering” unfolds, with all its twists and turns, secrets and betrayals.
From the very beginning, we are drawn into the world of Will (Jude Law), a wealthy architect who is struggling to keep his business afloat while dealing with the complicated dynamics of his personal life. His relationship with Liv (Robin Wright Penn), his partner and mother of his daughter Bea (Poppy Rogers), seems to be falling apart amidst their constant arguing and misunderstandings.
But things take an unexpected turn when Will’s office is broken into by a group of young thieves, led by the charismatic Miro (Rafi Gavron). Frustrated by the police’s inability to catch them, Will decides to take matters into his own hands and begins a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with Miro.
As he delves deeper into Miro’s world, however, Will discovers that there is much more at stake than just catching some petty criminals. He meets Amira (Juliette Binoche), Miro’s mother, who works as a seamstress in a shop below Will’s office. Amira is an immigrant from Bosnia who is struggling to survive in London while taking care of her autistic son.
Will becomes infatuated with Amira’s strength and resilience, but their relationship brings up complex issues around race, class, and privilege. Is Will exploiting Amira for his own selfish reasons? Or is he genuinely trying to help her?
This central conflict is what drives “Breaking and Entering” forward, as we watch these characters navigate their way through their messy lives. The film does an excellent job of showing how each person has their own struggles and motivations, making it hard to judge anyone as purely good or bad.
The acting is superb, particularly Juliette Binoche’s heart-wrenching portrayal of Amira. She brings a depth and complexity to the character that elevates the film beyond its standard thriller plotline. Jude Law is also solid as Will, although his character can be frustratingly naïve at times.
Director Anthony Minghella (who sadly passed away in 2008) crafts a visually stunning film, capturing both the beauty and grit of London through his lens. The score by Gabriel Yared is haunting and melancholy, adding to the film’s overall sense of unease.
While “Breaking and Entering” was not a box office hit upon its release in 2006, it has since gained a cult following for its nuanced characters and complex themes. It may not be as well-known as some of Minghella’s other works (such as “The English Patient” or “Cold Mountain”), but it deserves to be recognized as one of his best.
In typical Gabriel Garcia Marquez style, “Breaking and Entering” explores the tangled web of human relationships with honesty and empathy. It shows us that there are no easy answers when it comes to matters of the heart, and that sometimes we have to break a few rules (and enter a few forbidden places) in order to find our way home.
