Review

In the small town of Rogersville, Florida, tucked away in the swamps and gators, two friends, Joe Waters and Gus Green (played by Danny Glover and Joe Pesci), embark on a fishing trip to remember in Gone Fishin’, a 1997 comedy directed by Christopher Cain. This film takes us back to a time when blockbusters didn’t need superhero suits or death-defying stunts. Instead, it was all about two friends getting themselves into comedic situations, making audiences laugh until they cry.

The story follows the odd pairing of Waters and Green as they set out on their fishing trip. However, things go awry quickly as their car is stolen with all their gear inside. The two are forced to make do with what they have and try their best to catch some fish until they stumble upon a mafia deal happening in the woods that leads them into a wild goose chase.

One thing that stands out about this film is its dialogue. Each line delivered by Pesci and Glover feels authentic, as if they are genuinely ad-libbing every sentence. It’s hard not to chuckle at their deadpan humor and witty exchanges while both characters come across as more likable than expected.

Another significant aspect of Gone Fishin’ is its stylized cinematography. The directors made use of natural backgrounds whenever possible rather than relying on CGI or green-screened environments like modern films do nowadays. This gives the movie an authentic feel that makes you want to head out on your own fishing adventure right after watching it.

Gone Fishin’ also features an impressive cast of supporting actors such as Rosanna Arquette and Willie Nelson who make it worth watching even if you’re not a fan of buddy-comedies.

Although critically panned upon release – Roger Ebert famously gave it one star – this movie has aged like fine wine over time and now enjoys somewhat of a cult following. Its charm lies in its simplicity and its ability to transport viewers back to a simpler time, letting them forget about their worries and enjoy the ride.

The idea for Gone Fishin’ originated from two writers, Jill Mazursky and J.J. Abrams, who initially wrote the script as a dramatic piece that would star Tom Hanks and John Candy. However, after Candy’s passing in 1994, the project transformed into a comedy.

And what a comedy it was. The film was produced on a budget of $53 million but grossed only $19 million at the box office worldwide. Despite this disappointment, however, the soundtrack of the movie had four country songs that peaked on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart.

Gone Fishin’ is far from perfect – some critics have pointed out that it’s overly simplistic at times – but its heartwarming nature makes up for any flaws it may have. It’s impossible not to root for these two inept fishermen as they try their best to catch something worthy of showing off back home.

Additionally, Gone Fishin’ features some scenes that are just plain silly but hold up well even today. For example, there is one moment where Green catches a seagull instead of a fish by mistake or when he accidentally hooks his own butt.

The film’s soundtrack also deserves mention for featuring catchy country tunes by legends like Willie Nelson and Mark Collie that will have you tapping your toes throughout the entire movie.

In conclusion, while not perfect by any means, Gone Fishin’ is an underrated gem of 90s comedy with strong performances from Joe Pesci and Danny Glover. Its soundtrack adds to its charm while its scenic landscapes make viewers feel as if they’re right there fishing alongside these two unlikely friends. So if you ever want to escape from reality for 90 minutes and catch some laughs along the way- give this movie a try!
