Review
Act I
The curtain opens on the city of Albuquerque, where the audience is introduced to our protagonist, William Garnett. After serving 18 years in prison, he is released on parole and struggles to adjust to life outside the walls. His parole officer, Emily Smith, wants him to succeed and offers words of encouragement but also enforces the rules.
As Garnett tries to get his life back on track, he is confronted by his past – specifically, a police officer named Bill Agati who holds a grudge against Garnett for killing his partner. Agati constantly harasses Garnett and hopes to catch him committing another crime so that he can send him back behind bars.
Meanwhile, Garnett’s old friend Terence and his girlfriend Mariana urge him to leave Albuquerque and start anew elsewhere. But the temptation of revenge against Agati proves too strong for Garnett.
Act II
Garnett falls back into old habits when he finds work at a car dealership owned by his former prison buddy, Harvey. Together they plot a heist of one of Harvey’s clients.
Emily discovers their plan and warns Garnett that if he goes through with it, she has no choice but to send him back to prison. With a heavy heart, Garnett decides not to go through with it.
But Harvey goes behind his back and completes the robbery anyway – leading both Garnet and Harvey into even more trouble than before.
Act III
As the tension between Agati and Garnet reaches its boiling point, Emily pleads with both men not to do anything they’ll regret.
In a final showdown between the two men, we see how far Garnet has come since being released from prison. Rather than resorting to violence as he might have years ago, he shows mercy towards Agati – something that is ultimately rewarded by fate when Agati realizes that he was wrong about Garnet all along.
Epilogue
As the curtain closes on Two Men in Town, the audience is left to ponder the social issues of crime and justice that are at its heart. The film raises important questions about redemption, forgiveness, and second chances – themes that have resonated with audiences since Shakespearean times.
William Garnet is a complex character, with a past that he can’t escape and a future that seems uncertain. But his struggle to make amends for his crimes and start anew is one that many can relate to.
Throughout the film, we see stellar performances by Forest Whitaker (as William Garnet), Harvey Keitel (as Harvey), and Brenda Blethyn (as Emily Smith). Their acting is both inspiring and heart-wrenching at times.
The score by Eric Neveux sets the tone for each scene perfectly, creating tension when needed and emphasizing the emotional moments as they unfold.
The cinematography – with its gritty realism – helps to transport us into Garnett’s world, showing us the stark contrast between life inside prison walls and outside of them.
Overall, Two Men in Town is a powerful film that doesn’t shy away from difficult topics but also offers hope for those who have made mistakes in their pasts. It’s an excellent modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy that will leave audiences thinking long after the credits roll.
