Strays: A Tale of Love, Loss and Redemption
While Hollywood has churned out countless films about pets over the years, few have captured the raw emotion and heart-wrenching drama of Strays. Released in 1997, this indie gem has become a cult classic among cinephiles and animal lovers alike.
At its core, Strays is a story about family. We follow Rick (played by Vin Diesel in his breakout role), a young man struggling to find his place in the world. He lives with his girlfriend Lisa (Suzanne Lanza) in a rundown apartment complex populated by an eclectic group of misfits and outcasts.
But Rick’s life takes an unexpected turn when he takes in a stray dog named Baby. At first, he’s hesitant to take on the responsibility of caring for an animal, but he quickly grows attached to the lovable mutt. And as Baby becomes more important to him, Rick begins to see his own life in a new light.
But as much as Rick loves Baby, he also struggles to navigate his relationships with the people around him. His volatile temper gets him into trouble with local gangsters, putting both himself and Lisa at risk. And when tragedy strikes, Rick must confront his demons and find a way forward.
One of the things that sets Strays apart from other pet-focused films is its honest portrayal of human relationships. The characters are flawed and complex, each grappling with their own issues and insecurities. And while there’s plenty of heartwarming moments between Rick and Baby (including some truly adorable scenes of them playing together), it never feels like a saccharine movie-of-the-week tearjerker.
Vin Diesel gives an incredible performance as Rick. At this point in his career, he was still relatively unknown, but he brings an intensity and vulnerability to the role that’s impossible to ignore. His chemistry with Suzanne Lanza is palpable, and their scenes together are some of the film’s most memorable.
Of course, the real star of Strays is Baby. The dog (played by several different pups over the course of filming) is a scene-stealer, bringing warmth and humor to even the most tense moments. And while there are certainly some heavy themes explored in the movie, it never forgets to be entertaining.
Director John Singleton (best known for his work on Boyz n the Hood) brings a deft touch to the material. He infuses Strays with a gritty realism that makes it feel both authentic and cinematic. And while there are certainly moments that are tough to watch (including some scenes of animal abuse), he never shies away from showing us the harsh realities of life on the streets.
Since its release, Strays has become a bit of an underground sensation. It wasn’t a huge commercial success at the time (it only made around $70k at the box office), but it’s since gained a devoted following on DVD and streaming services. And its influence can be seen in other films that tackle similar subject matter with sensitivity and nuance.
In addition to Vin Diesel and Suzanne Lanza, Strays features some impressive supporting performances from actors like Joey Dedio and Mike Epps (in one of his earliest roles). And while it may not have won any major awards or accolades, its impact on audiences has been enduring.
So if you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and think about your own relationships with animals (and people), give Strays a watch. It may not be as well-known as other pet-centric films like Marley & Me or Homeward Bound, but it’s every bit as deserving of your attention.
