Review

Spirits of the Dead is a French-Italian film that is quite possibly one of the most unique and haunting films ever made. It is an anthology film based on three short stories by Edgar Allan Poe: “Metzengerstein”, “William Wilson”, and “Toby Dammit”. The three stories are linked together by a common theme – the supernatural, the macabre, and a deep sense of melancholy.

The film was directed by Roger Vadim, Louis Malle, and Federico Fellini – all major names in the world of cinema. Each segment is directed by a different director, which gives each story its own unique visual style and tone.

The first story, “Metzengerstein”, tells the story of a young noblewoman who becomes obsessed with her horse after she causes it to be burned alive. She begins to see the ghost of her horse everywhere she goes and eventually falls in love with it. The story is darkly Gothic and unsettling, with elements of eroticism that are typical of Vadim’s work.

The second story, “William Wilson”, follows a man who is tormented by his doppelganger – a sinister figure who represents everything he hates about himself. The story is classic Poe, full of psychological horror and themes of isolation and self-loathing.

The third and final segment, “Toby Dammit”, tells the tale of an alcoholic actor who is haunted by supernatural visions as he attempts to win an award at a film festival. The segment is directed by Fellini and has his signature surreal style that perfectly captures the sense of disorientation felt by the protagonist.

The performances in Spirits of the Dead are outstanding across the board. Each cast member brings their A-game to their respective segments, creating memorable characters that stay with you long after the credits roll.

One standout performance comes from Terence Stamp in “Toby Dammit”. He plays Toby as a man on the brink of madness, his desperation palpable in every scene. The final scene of the segment, in which Toby drives his sports car through a surreal landscape while being pursued by a demonic figure, is one of the most striking and memorable scenes in cinema history.

The film’s score is also worth mentioning. It was composed by noted French composer Maurice Jarre and perfectly captures the melancholic and supernatural tone of the film. The eerie melodies and haunting choral vocals add to the overall sense of unease and dread that permeates the entire film.

Spirits of the Dead was not a commercial success upon its release in 1968, but it has since become a cult classic thanks to its unique blend of horror, fantasy, and art-house aesthetics. It has influenced countless filmmakers over the years and remains a must-see for fans of Poe’s work or anyone who appreciates bold, boundary-pushing cinema.

In terms of production values, Spirits of the Dead is a marvel. The cinematography is stunning throughout each segment – from Vadim’s Gothic landscapes to Fellini’s fever-dream visuals. The special effects are also quite impressive for their time, particularly in Toby Dammit’s final sequence.

Despite its many strengths, Spirits of the Dead has not been without its critics. Some have accused it of being too disjointed or uneven due to its anthology format, while others have criticized certain segments for being overly indulgent or self-indulgent.

Regardless of opinions about its flaws or strengths though, it can be definitively said that Spirits Of The Dead is an engaging movie that offers plenty in terms of style and substance for those willing to give it a chance. With legends behind both cast and crew rosters this movie deserves attention from all cinephiles out there as an example on how horror can be blended into other genres with excellence.
