The movie “Shut In” is a thrilling and captivating film that takes you on a journey of suspense, fear, and compassion. It tells the story of Mary, a child psychologist who takes care of her paralyzed son and lives in an isolated house in rural New England. She is tasked with caring for a young boy named Tom, who is deaf and mute, after his parents died in a car accident.
The movie starts with Mary struggling to connect with Tom since he cannot communicate verbally. As the days go by, strange things start happening around the house. Mary hears footsteps when no one is there, doors close mysteriously, and she begins to see visions of her deceased husband.
As the tension builds up, Mary realizes that Tom may be hiding something from her. The plot thickens as Mary tries to uncover the truth about Tom’s past while dealing with her own demons.
The cast of “Shut In” includes Naomi Watts as Mary, Oliver Platt as Dr. Wilson, Charlie Heaton as Stephen Portman, and Jacob Tremblay as Tom. Each actor delivers powerful performances that engage viewers emotionally.
Naomi Watts portrays Mary’s internal struggle with empathy and strength. Charlie Heaton plays Stephen Portman as an enigmatic character whose motives are unclear until the end. Jacob Tremblay portrays Tom with sensitivity and depth despite his lack of dialogue.
Director Farren Blackburn masterfully captures the eerie atmosphere of rural New England through stunning cinematography that amplifies the tension throughout the film. The score by Nathaniel Mechaly adds another layer of dread that compliments each scene perfectly.
In an interview about “Shut In,” Naomi Watts said: “There are twists and turns in this tale which kept me gripped from start to finish.” Oliver Platt added: “It is a horror thriller but it has heart.”
Critics were divided on “Shut In” upon its release in 2016. Some praised its direction and performances, while others criticized its predictable plot and reliance on horror tropes.
Despite mixed reviews, “Shut In” garnered two nominations at the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. It also grossed over $25 million worldwide at the box office.
The film’s success can be attributed to its ability to engage audiences emotionally while keeping them on the edge of their seats. The development of Mary’s character throughout the film adds a layer of complexity that elevates it above traditional horror movies.
One scene that stands out is when Mary discovers a hidden room in her house, which leads her to unravel Tom’s secrets. The tension builds up as she uncovers more clues, and the revelation that follows takes audiences by surprise.
The dialogue between Mary and Tom is minimal, but their relationship is conveyed through action and emotion. Their dynamic adds a level of heart to the film that sets it apart from other thrillers.
