Review

It was a steamy summer day when I first laid my eyes on “She Done Him Wrong”, the classic movie that launched the career of the mesmerizing Mae West. The year was 1933 and the world was a different place, full of raw ambition, unbridled passion, and a sense of adventure that seemed to have been lost in our modern times.

The story begins in a seedy New York City bar during the Prohibition era, where Lady Lou (Mae West) holds court as the queen of all she surveys. She may be a hardened criminal, but she’s also a woman of great charm and wit, who knows exactly how to push men’s buttons and get what she wants.

Enter Captain Cummings (Cary Grant), a dashing young lawman who’s come to investigate the bar’s illegal activities. He’s immediately smitten with Lady Lou, and she with him, leading to a series of steamy encounters that set both their worlds ablaze.

But Lady Lou’s troubles are far from over. Her former lover Chick Clark (Owen Moore) has escaped from prison and is determined to get revenge on her for turning him in. Meanwhile, her boss Gus Jordan (Noah Beery Sr.) is pressuring her to spy on Cummings and report back to him about his activities.

As tensions rise and passions flare, it becomes clear that something has got to give. Will Lady Lou choose love or loyalty? Will Cummings be able to save her from danger? And will justice finally be served?

The plot may be simple, but it’s executed with such energy and panache that it feels like an epic journey through time and space. Mae West is simply phenomenal in every scene she graces with her presence – witty, sassy, confident, sexy beyond belief. Whether she’s singing songs like “Frankie & Johnny” or delivering one-liners like “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime?”, she commands attention like few other actresses in history.

Cary Grant, too, is a revelation as the suave hero who falls for Lady Lou’s charms. He may be best known for his roles in later movies like “North by Northwest” and “Charade”, but here he shows us a side of himself that’s vulnerable, passionate, and utterly irresistible.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, from the snarling Noah Beery Sr. to the lovely Louise Beavers, who plays Lady Lou’s loyal maid Pearl. The film captures a moment in time when anything seemed possible – even if it meant breaking the law to do it.

As I watched “She Done Him Wrong” again recently, I couldn’t help but marvel at how ahead of its time it was. Mae West was a trailblazer for female sexuality on screen, pushing boundaries that had never been explored before. Her confidence and self-assurance were an inspiration to generations of women to come.

But the film also speaks to larger themes of power dynamics and moral ambiguity that still resonate today. We see characters struggling with their own desires and fears, trying to navigate a world where there are no clear-cut answers.

And yet, despite all this complexity, “She Done Him Wrong” is still primarily a joyous celebration of life. From the rousing musical numbers to the raucous barroom brawls, it captures a sense of unbridled exuberance that’s rare in modern cinema.

As Gabriel Garcia Marquez once wrote: “It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.” In “She Done Him Wrong”, we see this truth play out in all its messy glory – but we also see something else: a vision of romance and adventure that refuses to be tamed or broken.

So if you’re looking for a movie that will lift your spirits and make you believe in the power of love, look no further than “She Done Him Wrong”. Mae West may have done him wrong, but she’ll always have our hearts.
