Review

It is not often that a movie captures the essence of a legend, but “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” does just that. It tells the story of one of the greatest football players of all time, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé. The movie transports us to his humble beginnings in Brazil and takes us on a journey through the ups and downs of his early life and career.

As I sat down to watch this masterpiece, I couldn’t help but be reminded of my own youth. Growing up on the banks of the Mississippi river, I never had much interest in soccer. But as I watched Pelé’s story unfold on screen, I was struck by his talent and his drive to succeed. He was someone who didn’t let adversity get in his way; he fought hard for what he wanted and never gave up.

The movie opens with a young Pelé playing barefoot with other kids on the streets of his hometown, Bauru. We see him kicking around an old orange until he’s spotted by a scout who invites him to join Santos FC. From there we witness how Pelé took Brazil by storm, leading Santos to win several championships while also helping Brazil secure three World Cup victories.

The film does an excellent job portraying the social tensions in Brazil during Pelé’s rise to fame. We see vividly how racism and poverty affected people at that time. However, throughout all these difficulties, Pelé remained focused on his passion for soccer.

The lead actor Kevin de Paula’s portrayal of Pelé is exceptional. He effortlessly captures his style of play, from dribbling past defenders to striking the ball with finesse and power. His performance is matched only by Vincent D’Onofrio as coach Vicente Feola who brings depth and nuance to the film.

Another notable aspect of “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” is its score which perfectly captures the mood of the movie. The soundtrack blends traditional Brazilian rhythms, samba, and bossa nova with contemporary music elements to create a unique soundscape that complements the striking visuals.

The film’s cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking. The team behind it has done an excellent job capturing the lush landscapes of Brazil, from its vibrant cities to its sprawling countryside. Every shot is beautifully framed and carefully composed.

As someone who has spent a lifetime crafting stories, I can tell you that crafting a movie is no easy feat. But “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” director Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist have done an exceptional job in bringing Pelé’s story to life on screen. They have successfully crafted a movie that not only entertains but also educates us about one of the world’s greatest soccer players.

In conclusion, “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” is a must-watch for any football fan or anyone who enjoys an uplifting and inspiring story of perseverance and dedication. This movie will leave you feeling inspired, uplifted, and grateful for the incredible talent that Pelé brought to the world of soccer. As Mark Twain once said, “The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” If Pelé had not taken that first step onto the field all those years ago, we would have missed out on witnessing one of the greatest players ever to grace the game.
