Let It Ride: A Lesson in Vulnerability and Taking Risks
I recently watched the 1989 movie Let It Ride, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Starring Richard Dreyfuss as Jay Trotter, a down-on-his-luck gambler who somehow manages to hit a hot streak at the racetrack, Let It Ride is a fun and engaging film that really speaks to the importance of vulnerability and taking risks.
The plot of the movie revolves around Jay’s quest to win big at the track. He’s not a particularly lucky guy, but for some reason, everything seems to be going his way on this particular day. As he racks up win after win, he starts to become more and more confident in his abilities as a gambler. But as we all know, luck can be fickle, and before long, everything starts to fall apart.
Despite the setbacks he faces along the way, Jay is determined to see things through to the end. He’s not afraid to take chances or put himself out there – in fact, it seems like he thrives on it. And that’s what makes him such a compelling character.
One of my favorite parts of Let It Ride is the way it showcases vulnerability in such a realistic way. Jay isn’t a perfect person by any means – in fact, he’s pretty flawed. He drinks too much, he gets into arguments with his wife (played by Teri Garr), and he doesn’t always make the best decisions. But instead of trying to hide those flaws or pretend like everything is fine all the time, he fully embraces them.
There’s something really refreshing about seeing a character who isn’t afraid to admit when they’re wrong or vulnerable. Too often in movies (and in real life), we’re taught that being strong means never showing weakness or admitting when we need help. But Let It Ride turns that stereotype on its head, showing us that true strength comes from being willing to put ourselves out there and take risks, even when we’re not sure we’ll succeed.
Of course, the cast of Let It Ride is another thing that makes the movie so enjoyable. Richard Dreyfuss is charming and likable as Jay, and he’s surrounded by a great supporting cast that includes David Johansen, Teri Garr, Jennifer Tilly, and more.
But ultimately, it’s the message of Let It Ride that really sets it apart. This is a movie about taking chances and embracing vulnerability – two things that can be extremely difficult to do. But the payoff is worth it; when we allow ourselves to be open and honest with others (and with ourselves), we create opportunities for growth and connection that wouldn’t exist otherwise.
So if you’re in the mood for a feel-good movie with heart and humor, I highly recommend Let It Ride. Who knows – maybe it will inspire you to take a risk or two of your own.
