Review
Friends and fellow moviegoers, I have taken upon myself the great task of writing a review of the unparalleled cinematic masterpiece that is “Grand Theft Auto”. It is a feast for your eyes and a joy for your soul that will leave you gasping for breath. This opus hails from the directorial debut of none other than Ron Howard, who has set a new standard in filmmaking.
The story revolves around Sam Freeman, played by Ron Howard himself, who is an aspiring musician with no money and no prospects. His wealthy father wants him to settle down and focus on his studies but Sam has other plans. He sets out on a perilous journey to win back his beloved Paula Powers (Nancy Morgan) who was taken away by her disapproving parents.
This young love is threatened by Paula’s parents’ influence over her decisions. Their desire to see their daughter with the son of their close friend, rich, handsome and sophisticated actor Burt Reynolds (yes, you read that right), creates chaos. Sam’s only hope is to steal his way through various obstacles thwarting his romance.
Our hero sets off on a high-speed chase involving many cars and police motorcycles, with helicopters hovering overhead. The city explodes in chaos as he navigates through the streets with skillful driving maneuvers while trying not to get caught by law enforcement officers.
As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one film, there are also biker gangs involved in this plotline. These menacing riders show up at just the right moments making Sam’s life even more complicated than before.
Howard’s acting skills should not go overlooked either – he portrays Sam Freeman as an earnest young man determined to prove himself worthy of the love of his life. Nancy Morgan shines as Paula Powers portraying her as strong-willed yet vulnerable at times when interacting with her parents.
But let us not forget about our dashing villain Burt Reynolds; Impeccable in his portrayal as the smooth and slick Blake T. Taylor. The chemistry between Reynolds and Howard is something to be admired, as well.
“Grand Theft Auto” boasts many memorable quotes that will stay with you long after you leave the theatre. One such line goes: “The problem with girls today is that they don’t wear dresses like I am used to seeing them wear” – a hilarious quip delivered by none other than Joseph Mascolo who plays Mr. Andrews, Paula’s father.
The film’s score is equally engaging, featuring upbeat rock ‘n’ roll numbers that match the frenzied pace of the movie perfectly. It’s not surprising that this soundtrack has become popular amongst fans of the film.
The popularity of “Grand Theft Auto” is daunting; it was a commercial success grossing over $15 million on a budget of just under $600,000. The film also spawned a video game series with the same name – which now has sold over 285 million copies worldwide and counting.
The production of “Grand Theft Auto” was not without its challenges, though – specifically when it came to filming some of the more challenging stunts sequences or explosive car crashes – but Howard always found creative ways to overcome these obstacles. This shows his dedication and innovation to ensure that he produced an exceptional final product that would captivate its audience from beginning to end.
Critics may argue that Howard’s directorial debut lacked originality or depth but I beg to differ. It was clear from Howard’s first film that he had an eye for exciting stories with a unique style of storytelling. Not only did he bring excitement and thrill but there was heart in this movie too.
In conclusion, I urge you all to make your way down to your local cinema and bask in the glory of “Grand Theft Auto”. A true masterpiece filled with action-packed drama, memorable characters, and an outstanding cast – it’s no surprise why this movie has become a cult classic to this day. Ron Howard’s debut set the bar high, and it will be hard to follow in his footsteps but I’m sure we can all agree it was a ride worth taking.
