Review

As a writer, poet, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou spoke with an eloquence and passion that few could match. Her words were always imbued with a sense of wisdom, history, and a fierce spirit of resistance. If she were here today, I can imagine her talking about Martin Scorsese’s Casino with the same incisive power that she brought to all of her writing.

Casino is a sprawling epic of a movie, one that takes us deep into the world of Las Vegas casinos, where gamblers and gangsters coexist in an uneasy truce. At the heart of the story is Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro), a brilliant gambler who has been called upon by the mob to run their casino. Ace is obsessive about his work, meticulous in his attention to detail, but also vulnerable to those who seek to exploit him.

We see this vulnerability in his relationship with Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone), a former prostitute who becomes his lover and eventually his wife. Ginger is beautiful and charismatic, but also unstable and manipulative. She sees Ace as her ticket to wealth and status, but she also resents him for trying to control her.

As the plot unfolds, we see how Ace’s obsessive nature leads him down a dangerous path. He becomes embroiled in a power struggle with Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), a violent enforcer for the mob who has his own ambitions for controlling the casino. Santoro is vicious and unpredictable—he’ll beat someone to death one minute and charm them with friendly banter the next.

The tension between Ace and Santoro builds over time, as each man tries to gain an advantage over the other. But their conflict isn’t just personal—there are larger forces at work behind the scenes. The mob bosses back in Kansas City are watching closely, ready to intervene if either man threatens their interests.

In many ways, Casino is a film about the corrosive nature of power. It’s about how people can be consumed by their ambitions and desires, until they lose sight of what really matters. This theme is embodied by Nicky Santoro, who becomes increasingly reckless and violent as he gains more control over the casino.

But it’s also embodied by Ace himself, who becomes so focused on his work that he neglects his personal relationships. He tries to control Ginger, but in doing so he only drives her away. He isolates himself from others, becoming a lonely figure in an impersonal world.

Despite these heavy themes, Casino also has moments of humor and levity. There are plenty of scenes where De Niro and Pesci trade barbs or engage in witty banter. And there are moments of pure visual spectacle—the camera swooping through the casino floor as slot machines jingle and gamblers shout.

Throughout the film, Scorsese employs a variety of techniques to keep the audience engaged. He uses split screens to show different characters’ perspectives at once; he layers voiceovers on top of each other to create a sense of chaos; he cuts rapidly between scenes to maintain the pace.

The cinematography is also stunning—whether capturing the neon-lit streets of Las Vegas or the stark beauty of the desert landscape, Scorsese and his team create vivid and memorable images.

Of course, one can’t discuss Casino without mentioning the performances. De Niro brings his usual intensity to the role of Ace Rothstein—he’s both commanding and vulnerable at once. Pesci is absolutely terrifying as Nicky Santoro—he’s like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. And Sharon Stone delivers one of her best performances as Ginger McKenna, conveying both glamour and tragedy in equal measure.

But what sets Casino apart from other gangster films is its attention to detail. Scorsese clearly did his research, and the film is filled with small touches that give it authenticity. From the costumes to the music to the set design, everything feels carefully curated and thought-out.

All of these elements combine to create a film that is both gritty and glamorous, tragic and thrilling. It’s a story about human ambition, about the lure of power, about the corrosive nature of greed. And like all great films, it leaves us with much to think about long after the credits roll.

As Maya Angelou once said, “We are more alike than unalike.” This sentiment reminds us that we can learn from each other’s stories and experiences. Casino is a powerful reminder of this fact—it’s a story that resonates across time and space, one that speaks to our shared human experience in all its complexity.
