Review

When it comes to classic buddy cop movies of the 80s, the list is quite long and distinguished. But one movie that stands out amongst all others is Walter Hill’s iconic “48 Hrs.”. Released in 1982, “48 Hrs.” was a game-changer in many ways. It was the film that officially put Eddie Murphy on the map, propelling him to stardom and establishing him as a comedic force to be reckoned with. The movie also marked the first time a white person and a black person starred together in a major motion picture.

“48 Hrs.” follows the story of Jack Cates, played by Nick Nolte, a hard-edged San Francisco police detective who needs help catching two cop killers who have escaped from prison. To do so, he turns to Reggie Hammond, played by Eddie Murphy, a fast-talking convict who has information on the killers but is only allowed out of jail for 48 hours.

From the opening credits sequence set to The BusBoys’ electrifying song “New Shoes” to its tense and action-packed finale, “48 Hrs.” is an adrenaline-fueled film that never lets up. The plot is tight and well-paced, with enough twists and turns to keep the audience on their toes without ever feeling convoluted or confusing.

The chemistry between Nolte’s gruff veteran detective and Murphy’s wise-cracking criminal is what really sets this movie apart. Hill’s decision to cast Murphy in his first acting role was inspired; his natural charisma and comedic timing make him impossible not to love. Meanwhile, Nolte brings a level of intensity and depth to his character that makes him more than just another tough guy cop.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. James Remar plays Ganz, one of the escaped prisoners who takes sadistic pleasure in tormenting Cates throughout the film. Meanwhile, David Patrick Kelly steals every scene he’s in as Ganz’s unhinged partner, Luther. The late Sonny Landham rounds out the cast as Billy Bear, a Native American hitman who works for the villains.

The film’s score is also worth noting. James Horner’s pulsing synth-heavy soundtrack perfectly captures the gritty urban feel of San Francisco and complements the action on screen. The standout track, however, is “The Boys Are Back In Town” by Thin Lizzy, which plays during one of the film’s most iconic scenes.

Despite its status as a classic of the genre, “48 Hrs.” has faced criticism over the years for its depiction of race relations. Some have accused it of perpetuating harmful stereotypes, while others argue that it was actually groundbreaking for its time in showing a black man and a white man working together to achieve a common goal.

Regardless of where you stand on that issue, there’s no denying that “48 Hrs.” is an exciting and entertaining movie that still holds up today. It’s easy to see why it was such a box office success and spawned countless imitators in the years to come.

If you’re a fan of buddy cop movies or just looking for some pulse-pounding action and great performances, do yourself a favor and check out “48 Hrs.” It may be over 30 years old, but it still packs quite a punch.
