Review
As a researcher with a penchant for exploring the human experience, I’m always on the lookout for stories that challenge our notions of identity and belonging. With its brazen portrayal of toxic masculinity and incel culture, “Cuck” is one such film that demands our attention.
At its core, “Cuck” tells the story of a lonely and disillusioned young man named Ronnie (played by Zachary Ray Sherman) who becomes increasingly radicalized by white supremacist ideology. As he spends more time trolling online forums and watching far-right propaganda videos, he begins to view himself as a victim of society’s supposed preference for diversity over white masculinity. His growing sense of resentment leads him down a dangerous path, fueled by anger and violence.
While these themes are undeniably timely in today’s political climate, “Cuck” has been met with controversy and criticism since its release. Many have accused it of glorifying or even sympathizing with the alt-right movement, while others have questioned its accuracy in depicting the realities of incels and white nationalists.
Regardless of where one stands on these debates, however, there’s no denying that “Cuck” is an unflinching look at the dark underbelly of American society. Director Rob Lambert clearly isn’t afraid to tackle difficult subjects head-on, portraying Ronnie’s descent into extremism with brutal honesty.
Of course, none of this would work without strong performances from its cast. Sherman does an excellent job in his portrayal of Ronnie – at once pitiable and fearsome – while Sally Kirkland delivers a heartbreaking turn as his mother. The supporting cast also shines; David Diaan in particular brings nuance to his role as the owner of a far-right website who takes Ronnie under his wing.
But what really sets “Cuck” apart is its visual style. Shot on location in gritty urban settings, the film has an almost documentary-like feel at times – no doubt helped by the fact that Lambert frequently worked with non-professional actors. The result is a film that feels raw and immediate, almost uncomfortably so at times.
It’s also worth mentioning the score, which is appropriately moody and tense throughout. Composed by Julian Scherle, the music draws on everything from classical strings to distorted electronics to create an unsettling undercurrent that propels the story forward.
So what do we make of “Cuck” in the end? Is it a fearless exploration of a taboo subject, or a misguided attempt to humanize dangerous ideologies? The truth is likely somewhere in between. While some may take issue with its portrayal of certain groups or individuals, there’s no denying that “Cuck” raises important questions about the state of our society today.
As Brené Brown might say, this film challenges us to confront uncomfortable truths – about ourselves and our communities. It asks us to look past surface-level differences and grapple with deeper-seated issues like loneliness, alienation, and fear. And it reminds us that no matter how difficult or divisive these conversations may be, they’re ultimately necessary if we hope to build a more inclusive and compassionate world for all.
