Review
My dear readers, gather round and lend me your ears, for I have just returned from the theater where I witnessed the latest cinematic adventure of Marvel’s famous assassin, Black Widow. Directed by Cate Shortland, this movie has caused quite a stir among the public, and it is my duty to share my thoughts with you in the style of the great Mark Twain.
The story begins in Ohio during the late 1990s, where we see a young Natasha Romanoff living with a surrogate family posing as an American couple. The opening scene manages to set the tone for the rest of the movie, capturing both the essence of Natasha’s character and her troubled past. Scarlett Johansson delivers an impeccable performance as always and manages to bring out every layer of complexity present in her character.
After evading some thunderstorms on their journey back to their homeland over time and space – Russia – we meet Natasha’s sister Yelena played by Florence Pugh. From that moment onwards, we are blessed with a dynamic duo bringing on all the humor you would expect from a Marvel film but also an emotional depth rarely seen before in superhero films. The chemistry between Johansson and Pugh is nothing short of magnificent.
The plot follows our two heroines as they embark on a journey to stop General Dreykov played by Ray Winstone from brainwashing young girls into becoming deadly assassins through mind control technology. This leads them to reunite with their parents Red Guardian played by David Harbour and Melina played by Rachel Weisz respectively.
The action sequences are phenomenal; each fight scene appears authentic and well-choreographed without resorting entirely into CGI, which is something that superhero movies tend to over-rely upon these days. Not only that but also Shortland’s imagery is breathtaking, showcasing multiple high-risk chases throughout various parts of the world.
However, one cannot overlook the fact that this film has been released years too late. Johansson has deserved her own solo movie for years, considering the massive contribution she has made to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nevertheless, better late than never.
The use of Taskmaster as a villain was a sensational choice, given that we are finally able to witness the return of Natasha’s backstory; however, saying any more would be spoiling far too much.
All in all, Black Widow is a movie that is both satisfying for Marvel fans and general moviegoers. The story will take you on an emotional rollercoaster and leave you feeling as though there’s still more to explore within this universe.
In conclusion, dear readers, if you were planning on watching this film or not sure whether it’s worth your time and money – do not hesitate anymore. Run along now and experience the one thing Mark Twain and I can agree upon – this exhilarating superhero blockbuster; it rocks!
