Review

It’s not often that one gets the chance to witness a cinematic masterpiece that is able to encapsulate historical events with such precision and accuracy, whilst still managing to retain an air of suspense and intrigue. Yet, “An Officer and a Spy”, the latest film by Roman Polanski, does just that.

Set against the backdrop of the infamous Dreyfus Affair in fin-de-siècle France, this thrilling drama follows the story of Officer Georges Picquart, superbly portrayed by Jean Dujardin. Picquart is tasked with investigating allegations of treason against Alfred Dreyfus (played by Louis Garrel), a Jewish officer in the French army who has been falsely accused of passing secret military information to the Germans.

As he delves deeper into the case, however, Picquart discovers a web of lies and deceit perpetrated by his own superiors in order to cover up their mistake and protect their own reputations. In doing so, he sets himself on a collision course with some of the most powerful figures in French society – including military leaders, high-ranking politicians, and even members of his own family.

Despite being based on real-life events that occurred over 120 years ago, “An Officer and a Spy” remains eerily relevant today. Its exploration of themes such as institutional corruption, anti-Semitism, and propaganda are as pertinent now as they were then. Indeed, one cannot help but be struck by how easily such events could occur again under similar circumstances today.

The film’s historical accuracy is also remarkable. Polanski expertly recreates 19th-century Paris both visually and thematically – from its dark alleyways to its grand boulevards – without ever losing sight of its sociopolitical context. The production design is especially noteworthy for its attention to detail – every costume piece or prop seems perfectly chosen to evoke the era.

Of course, no film is complete without a strong cast, and “An Officer and a Spy” does not disappoint in this regard. Dujardin’s performance as Picquart is nothing short of excellent – he imbues the character with a mix of intelligence, integrity, and vulnerability that makes him both relatable and admirable. Garrel’s portrayal of Dreyfus is equally compelling, capturing both his dignity and his despair in the face of injustice.

Other standout performances include Emmanuelle Seigner as Picquart’s lover Marguerite, Mathieu Amalric as the unscrupulous prosecutor-general who tries to silence Picquart, and Grégory Gadebois as the misguided general who leads the charge against Dreyfus.

Polanski also deserves credit for his skilled direction, which manages to keep the tension high throughout even when little seems to be happening on-screen. The pacing is deliberate but never sluggish, with each scene building upon the ones before it to create a sense of mounting urgency.

The film’s score by Alexandre Desplat is another highlight – its sweeping orchestral pieces perfectly complementing the drama unfolding on-screen. The cinematography by Pawel Edelman adds an additional layer of depth to the proceedings, with its use of shadows and light helping to convey both mood and atmosphere.

It should come as no surprise then that “An Officer and a Spy” has already garnered critical acclaim since its release in France last year. It won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice Film Festival 2019 and was nominated for five César Awards (France’s equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Picture.

However, not everyone has been so enamoured with Polanski’s latest work. Some have accused him of glorifying a traitor (Dreyfus) or attempting to whitewash his own past (Polanski himself has been accused of sexual assault). Others have criticised his decision to adapt Robert Harris’ novel of the same name, claiming that it oversimplifies a complex historical event.

Yet, no matter where one stands on these issues, there is no denying the power and impact of “An Officer and a Spy” as a work of cinema. It is a film that challenges us to question our own assumptions about justice, truth, and power – and one that will remain with the viewer long after the credits have rolled.
