Review

The world of Federico Fellini’s Amarcord, his semi-autobiographical masterpiece, is a pulsating and vividly alive one, full of colourful characters, bawdy humour and nostalgic longing. The film is a symphony of sights and sounds, a gloriously frenzied depiction of life in the small Italian town of Rimini during the 1930s.

The film opens with an image of a flying angel, setting the tone for the fantastical and whimsical nature of the piece. We meet Titta (Bruno Zanin), the story’s young protagonist who we follow through his coming-of-age journey amidst an array of eccentric personalities.

Fellini’s film is an ode to nostalgia and memory. It is an intimate look into his own childhood memories filtered through an adult lens. Throughout the film, he constructs a world that blends reality and dream-like sequences in a way that feels both authentic and surreal.

The storyline meanders through various situations that capture daily life in Rimini during this period. There are scenes portraying life at school, relationships between family members, social gatherings at local cafes, religious celebrations, encounters with fascists, among others.

One particular scene stands out as it captures the essence of Fellini’s magical realism style. During a snowy winter night as townspeople gather around a bonfire to celebrate St. Joseph’s day – fireworks light up the sky – they witness a gigantic ship sailing across their small town amidst cheers and awe.

Throughout most of Amarcord‘s running time it seems like there isn’t much plot happening. Characters come in and out without warning or explanation; events occur with no clear rhyme or reason (or sometimes just for shock value). But when pieces start to connect together towards the end – particularly involving Titta’s father – everything starts to fall into place magnificently well.

The casting for this film was impeccable; every actor fit their character to perfection. The ensemble cast consists of some of the most iconic Italian actors of the time, including Magali Noël as Gradisca, the object of Titta’s affection, and Armando Brancia as the comically tragic Uncle Teo.

The film’s score is enchanting, composed by Nino Rota, who also worked with Fellini on several other projects. The score evokes a sense of longing and nostalgia that perfectly complements Fellini’s visual storytelling.

Amarcord is a film that rewards repeated viewings; each time you watch it feels like discovering something new. It celebrates life in all its chaos and messiness while capturing the complexities and contradictions of human nature.

Fellini’s direction was masterful in bringing his vision to life, blending reality with fantasy seamlessly. His use of colour is particularily striking, evoking flavors and emotions that linger long after viewing the film.

In 1974, Amarcord won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; it remains one of Fellini’s most popular and beloved movies among both film critics and viewers alike.

As Gabriel Garcia Marquez once said: “A good writer is a writer who enthrals us with his story once again.” And Federico Fellini was undoubtedly one such writer-entertainer. Through Amarcord, he captured not only his childhood but a whole era in Italy’s history. A truly captivating masterpiece that should hold a place in any cinephile’s collection.
